Eating out with Type 1 Diabetes .....

Its very hard to eat out with type 1 diabetes .....

Everything changes - Fat content, GI etc

I think the trick is in remebring to play cautiously and to err on the higher side ...

1) To not eat outside food all that often!

2) To err on the higher side

3) To remeber its okay to have higher sugars for a while when going out than battle with low sugars

4) Sometimes its okay

If you want perfect sugars, you need to stay home ....

5) If the child is cranky, dont take out at all

Have a mental record of what you are eating carbs - High fat split dose in two halfs ....

Mental Health

Riding the sugar bull is pretty challenging and like any sport it takes both physical and mental agility to manage.

Day before yesterday night (post novo power) there was spike in his sugar for no apparent reason (no change in diet or long acting etc) and the trend continued today post breakfast (post novo power) and that really bummed me out. So, I figured, long acting insulin must be not working well and I changed the cartridge and now so far it's been alright.

Yesterday it was a bit hard emotionally since his blood sugars were elevated for a large part of night as well as noon.

I need to figure out my response to a bad day :-

1) Step 1 would be to analyze the reason and rectify for future instances

2) To remember one instance doesn't define his overall health. More important that he's morally and emotionally happy ..

3) More important is to understand the reason and prevent for future instances ..

4) Worrying about possible health issues from lows or highs or fluctuations is not helpful - We need to understand what we can do better and go from there.

5) Better nutrition, More predictable food, Better physical health, Risk free nights,

6) Remember technology is advancing rapidly and we will have smarter, easier pumps in 5 years or so - That will make life lot easier for both him and us ...

7) We can only control inputs and not outputs ..

8) Anytime things go out of hand, important to remember: To analyse, Be Rational,  Do the best!

9) Controlling Inputs:
1) Realizing Bad Insulin soon - If nothing explains or there's a 50% or higher chance
2) Food - Nutrition,  Gluten, GI and Fibre
3) Physically active and emotionally strong!
